brewery

THE SAN GABRIEL CRAFT BREWERY WAS BORN IN BUSCO DI PONTE DI PIAVE, TREVISO, IN 1997.

It was founded by Gabriele Tonon a Biersommelier graduating from the Doemens Academy of Munich in Baveria.

On his initiative he decided to invest in his great passion for beer combined with a deep knowledge of the typical products of the area between the Piave rivers and the Sile.

Production began in an ancient villa close to the ancient Benedictine Abbey where medicated drinks (including beer) were prepared in the Middle Ages, and from which San Gabriel took inspiration for the creation of its recipes, continuing thus, ideally, the brasserie activity of the Monks.

the territory

BUSCO DI PONTE DI PIAVE TREVISO

is in the province of Treviso, a few miles from VENICE and an hour from the DOLOMITES which recently became a Unesco world heritage site.

Over more than 20 years San Gabriel has been able to stand out in the renewed panorama of Italian craft breweries, focusing on quality , through the scrupulous attention to the production techniques of the Bavarian masters, and on the constant search for native raw materials .

ITALIAN TRADITION,
BAVARIAN HEART

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Since 1997, the precious recipes with which the San Gabriel craft beers are produced, have been enriched with the experience gained
in “Hausbräuerei” of Bavaria and Austria.

The processing is carried out with modern technology and follows
the dictate of the edict on purity, issued in Bavaria at the time of the
Renaissance, with the purpose of ensuring the authenticity of the golden drink.

the water

WATER IS THE ESSENCE

If you drink a San Gabriel drink the water that flows in San Polo di Piave, a few kilometers from the brewery. Here, between the rivers Piave and Lia, the springs give us the water that comes from the Dolomites .

It is an extraordinary water, naturally pure due to the long underground path that it takes from the snowy peaks to the plain.

the malt

MALT IS THE SOUL

Since 2006 San Gabriel has started the direct cultivation of the couplet barley in the province of Treviso.

Left to germinate and then processed, barley becomes the precious malt.

the hops

.

HOPS ARE THE AROMA

Plant whose flower gives the characteristic bitter to the beer and lengthens its conservation. For our beers we mainly use Bavarian hops , also from our own production.

It should be remembered that a wild variety of hops has always grown in the San Gabriel area : the bruscarlo well known in the past centuries by those who produced beer in the abbeys in the area.

THE VILLAGE ORIGIN

At Levada di Ponte di Piave , at a crossroads on Via Postumia, there was a factory where the tree trunks were cut, which were transported by the current of the Piave river, tied in large rafts and led by the mythological figures of the zattieri. At the height of its splendor, more than a century ago, the trees cut in the Cadore and Val Visdende arrived in such numbers that, in Levada, the first small sawmill was enlarged , becoming a real industrial complex among the most important in the area .

THE VILLAGE HISTROY

Subsequently, during the 1900s, the conditions of the Piave changed and both the use of its water for irrigation and the dams that were built one after the other along its course made the ancient timber trade impractical. .
So the Levada factory, with hundreds of other similar plants, closed its doors and, together with the adventurous job of the zattieri, ended up forgotten by history.

Today, that old factory has risen and is once again a place of work and creation, but it is also a place of memory and, of course, of refreshment.

THE VILLAGE PRESENT & FUTURE

Every day, in the buildings and rooms that saw the work of dozens of workers, work has returned, with the San Gabriel Brewery factory , where an excellent craft beer is created and produced, linked to the land where it is born.

Next to the brewery are the Piave Caffè roasting and the company store . In the Osteria della Birra  you can discover traditional dishes, while the walls tell of the rural and industrial tradition of the place. In the  Cafeteria , housed in an ancient warehouse, you can instead enjoy the Piave Caffè in a relaxing environment dedicated to dialogue, reading and culture.

All these different spaces constitute  a single Borgo della Birra , which makes them unique precisely because they are not isolated but communicating through the Piazza, in a continuous pouring and receiving made up of experiences, knowledge, stories and emotions.

SLOW brewing

CERTIFIED

SLOW BREWING CERTIFIED

Birra San Gabriel is one of only four Italian certified breweries.
Birra Antoniana is another of the only four Italian certified breweries.

The Slow Brewing Quality Seal represents the most comprehensive and rigorous hallmark of excellence in the international beer market.

To qualify for the Quality Seal, a beer should exhibit consistently superior flavor and character, the raw materials must be of the highest quality and the production process must adhere to strict standards.

The company’s culture and business structure are a major focus of the assessment. Inspections and evaluations of the production process, the beers and the brewery itself are not performed a single time but rather frequent intervals on a regular basis.

An assessment of the production process and the finished beers is performed on a monthly basis, while the company’s conduct in the market and its corporate culture are reviewed annually.
